My father cannot understand British accents at all. He needs subtitles to watch movies with British actors. This is 100% legit. He refuses to watch British comedians because he can’t understand them in the slightest.

He once was invited to lunch by a British friend named Bob, and my father took me as a young adolescent along to interpret for him. Bob would speak and I’d have to repeat his words in an American accent for my father to understand.

Bob looked genuinely confused at first and thought it was a joke. He asked if we were playing a prank and refused to believe my father’s answer after I translated the question. As it went on, he became more and more resigned as I imagine every American stereotype was proven true.

To this day, my father groans when British people ask to speak with him. He genuinely likes British people, but he knows he’s gonna have to find someone to interpret for him.

Oh no
My little girl is developing a British accent - her favorite YouTubers are British. So she sounds like just *herself* to me, but every time people hear her talk for any length of time, I get questions.

Mine goes the other way, she's developing an American/Canadian accent courtesy of 'Sandra from the Disney Toy Channel' and some chap called Preston who does Minecraft videos.

I once lived in an apartment where the owner was newly arrived from Taiwan and one of the other tenants was newly arrived from Russia. I wound up translating for them as neither could understand the other’s accent.
