Our ancestors layered a confusing level of complexity into our languages. For example, we call them “frogs” and say that they “croak” but we write their vocalization as “ribbit”. Why not just call them “ribbits” and save two words? “The ribbits are especially loud tonight.”

But, not always. "Wow, that's a lot of ribbits." Could be many frogs, or could be one frog being especially talkative.
