Can a devout, intellectually honest Catholic explain to me why they're Catholic and not Protestant Christian?
This isn't a challenge, but an opportunity for me to learn.
Maybe @TheBrometheus?

I went from Protestant to Catholic in the last 6 months so maybe I can help. I was raised by family to hate the Catholic Church and was taught all kinds of things about them. When I started exploring I demanded answers from lots of Catholics.

I kept hearing, “It’s true we do that, but not to that extent, and here’s the reason plus 2,000 years of documentation on why stretching back to the original disciples plus biblical references.”

When I’d ask why so many Catholics screw up their own beliefs I kept hearing, “Catholics are required to teach their children and also to actively seek answers themselves to better understand. Some Catholics don’t do this, so people outside get bad impressions from these.”

I started looking for myself at what each reason was, good back into scripture to find Jesus’ command on it. And I kept coming up with solid reasons why it really did work.

My experience was largely similar, but I was in seminary. Intellectual honesty meant I couldn’t hold both Sola Scriptura and trinitarian dogma. Prima Scriptura slowly started showing me a world that looked more and more Catholic.

“Worst” thing was I had to take a long, hard look at those words Jesus said about the Eucharist and question why those weren’t literal when “everything” else he said was.

And why He was willing to let everyone walk away rather than say He was just being metaphoric.
