One message I keep hearing from fellow Catholics as I move toward Confirmation is that no Catholic can be said to be a good Catholic. Those who claim to be are vain and excusing their own sins, and those who are humble and close to good will still fall short of the perfect law.

There is freedom, purpose, meaning, and hope in this balance. Imperfection can be forgiven through grace and love. Filial piety demands sincere striving to atone for the past through obedient works now and tomorrow. Those works never create salvation but are outward signs.
