No question: a state-sanctioned death penalty violates the dignity of the human person. Questions: Can the Pope just change the wording of any section of the catechism without the input & agreement of experts? If so, is he teaching ex cathedra when he does this?
A cynical answer might be that if no one else in leadership opposes the action, one can do anything one pleases...

And that exactly is my issue. If, next month, the Pope decides to change the catechism to say that there is never need for plastic straws.... can he just do that??

Without adequate accountability and pushback from fellow leadership and local grassroots folks, and short of direct intervention by God, what would stop him?
