  1. PhD candidate , from the BIDS Lab, has published a new study suggesting melodic alarms could improve alertness levels whilst harsh alarm tones are linked to increased levels of morning grogginess. This has important implications for shift workers and first responders.

The impact of the Australian wildfires has been devastating and terrifying. They pose a very real danger to the country's immensely diverse insect populations. But the bushfires may have put one native bee on the teetering brink of extinction.

I'm an entomologist Skills people think I have: - identify any insect or spider from a blurry photo - identify what bit them Skills I actually have: - Googling the right words to get an image search close to the bug you photographed - finding weird bugs that no-one else notices

Excited to see our work named #32 in Discovery magazine's top 50 science stories of 2019. Congratulations to our team on a great year of scientific exploration demonstrating the intelligence of bees! There are many more exciting things to come in 2020 🐝

Good article. No mention of except as food for verts, so a quick thread about the insect side of the story. Note: we cannot even estimate number of individuals lost because insect populations are notoriously hard to measure & very little data exist

Thanks to & , we've learned bees can understand zero. In 2019, we discovered their tiny insect brains can do basic maths AND can link symbols to numbers. So few neurons, so much power! Find out more:

Today, November 20th : Karl von Frisch's 133 anniversary! Born in Vienna, Austria, he got the Nobel Prize in 1973 for his studies on honeybees and his discovery of honeybee "dances", which inform other bees about distance and direction of profitable food. A science master!!!
