Here's a dirty little secret: as much as I appreciate the democratization of art and pop culture and media in general -- with how that's lowered barriers to entries and made a lot of niche projects financially viable -- I still love the monoculture, just a little bit.

There's something exciting and, if I'm being frank, very warm about everyone focusing on One Big Thing for a moment, whether that's the Super Bowl or the Oscars, or whatever else is on the increasingly shorter list of things with the power to command our full attention.

There's been a lot written about a broader sense of alienation in the modern era, a feeling that we're all apart and at a distance from one another. Those big events are one of the few times we manage to cut through that sense, to feel like we're all connected and united somehow.

There is, instead, a very communal feeling. To me, it's like we're all sitting around the campfire together, all waiting to see what happens next as one complete whole.

And I know that Election Day can be contentious, and anxiety-ridden, and unpleasant sometimes, but I still look forward to it each time, regardless of the poll numbers, because it feels like the peak of that to me.

People from all different walks of life go to the polls on the same day, vote their conscience on the same day, follow the returns on the same day. We're all tuned to the same big moment, all joined up in this massive thing that's been rolling and expanding for centuries.

So go vote! Be a part of that thing! Even if you're skeptical about the outcome of a race, or the value of your vote, just go join in this communal act! Sit around the campfire with the rest of us! And enjoy one of those last little traditions that still brings us all together.
