2 weeks ago my book The Hill We Climb and 3 others were removed from elementary school shelves Bob Graham Education Center in Florida. But when they go low we go high. I’ve helped purchase 1,200 copies of these challenged books to be given away for FREE today at 6pm.… Show more

These book bans aren’t protecting children, they’re prohibiting them from accessing diverse and excellent literature. Visit pen.org/action to send an e-note directly to decision makers demanding they protect students’ freedom to read 📚✊🏿

So happy to see so many children get their free books at our book giveaway poetry event--a school may have taken it off the shelf, but we're doing everything we can to make sure these stories of hope, history, and heart keep making it into the hands of these young readers.

These books matter. The turnout for tonight’s FREADOM event is already incredible! Thank you again to @TheAmandaGorman for your generosity. We’ve already put three incredible books in the hands of so many children.

They won't call it a ban. Yet not only has my book been moved, but now elementary schoolers must request a copy from a specialist at its new site AND then also PROVE their reading level before seeing a copy. All these hurdles for a young reader just to access a poem in history… Show more

It's not a ban, they said. It just on another shelf, they said. But the truth about the ban on @TheAmandaGorman's book—as is often the case with book banners—was something quite different: An elaborate—& daunting—process for elementary school children simply to access a poem. twitter.com/jonfreadom/sta…

“Because we believe that the education should always be meaningful, relevant and connected. And we believe that kids need to be able to make sense of what’s going on in the world.” (Not FL’s Governor) Check out their performance:

“One of the foundations of education is to develop critical, informed, compassionate citizens because we think that’s fundamental to democracy. And we think that democracy doesn’t work unless children are educated and they understand various perspectives.”

Utterly shameless: Ron DeSantis is lashing out at the media for reporting on the removal of the Amanda Gorman book, calling it a "poem hoax." Again, *one single objector* got this poem removed, simply by slapping the label "hate" on it. Just preposterous: washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/

NCAC encourages anyone in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools or Bob Graham Education Center community to immediately contact the school board and demand the appeal of this school-level decision!

So they ban my book from young readers, confuse me with @oprah , fail to specify what parts of my poetry they object to, refuse to read any reviews, and offer no alternatives…Unnecessary #bookbans like these are on the rise, and we must fight back 👊🏿 DONATE here:… Show more

"I'm not a reader. I'm not a book person." Daily Salinas, who successfully petitioned the Miami-Dade County school district to remove several books, including 's "The Hill We Climb," says "she had only read parts" of them.

We are barring young people from access to a poem that was read at the most significant moment of our shared democratic American experience. One that was threatened just days before. Because of one parent.

For those claiming my book wasn’t banned, just “aged-up”—The Hill We Climb is an inaugural poem for the world. Relocating it to older age group library shelves by its nature bars younger and equally deserving generations from accessing said moment in history. twitter.com/FLFreedomRead/…

.⁦@raeganmiller⁩ said the issue of a book’s age-appropriateness is often used as a loophole to restrict books because of the vague nature of the classification. The same, she said, is happening with books challenged on the grounds of sexual content. latimes.com/entertainment-

Schools should be fostering growth and the exchange of ideas — not preventing students from learning and understanding different perspectives. These unnecessary book bans join a host of other attempts to silence us. We must fight back.

The Hill We Climb is making headlines, but please don’t forget there are three other titles - titles clearly written for elementary school readers - that are restricted too. We need to get The ABCs of Black History, Love to Langston, & Cuban Kids back on K-5 shelves too!

It's not just @TheAmandaGorman. This book was challenged in Miami Dade county for "CRT and gender ideology" by a single parent, too. The district acknowledged it was written for kids aged 5+, but decided it was inappropriate before 6th grade... 👀 🧵

Thank you so much for standing with me ! It’s heartwarming to hear a School Board Member from this county defend students’ right to read my poem!

I am extremely disappointed by the news that the poem, “The Hill We Climb,” by @TheAmandaGorman was removed due to a parent’s complaint. This is a result of the Governor’s divisive rhetoric & political agenda. It is completely unacceptable & our community will not stand for it.
