I never had the chance to meet that grand-uncle (he died before my time), but I assume he was a gambling man

I also had a grand-uncle who decided to emigrate to Britain in March 1940, which turned out to be a case of freaking good timing as the Nazis invaded less than a month later. He spent the war as an airplane mechanic and later left for Canada, where he raised a family.

There was a family reunion back in the 80s, but that was the last time we heard from any of them. They're probably spending their time doing whatever it is Canadians do

Wow! What was his name? I'd love to do an article on him.

Alf Olavsen. I dont think there's any documentation about him online other than the prisoner registry of Arkivet, a state archive that the Gestapo turned into a regional command centre and torture facility. It's currently a museum. https://www.arkivet.no/fangeregister

Which part of Norway?

Agder. It was likely somewhere in Kristiansand, specifically in the now-defunct municipality of Oddernes
