That ER scene in film/television where a nurse is straddling a gurney doing chest compressions while it’s being wheeled into a trauma room? I can now say that that very much happens. Unlike the movies, tho, it never ends well.

I've got a big piece coming out this Wednesday that I worked very, very hard on. It's coming from @undarkmag, and it's about American zoos. Keep an eye out!
From a friend abroad: There is a Carhartt store in Florence. Envisioning ’s Italian vacation now.

Therapist sent me a research article about the correlation between ADHD and risky behavior; such as becoming a bounty hunter, having a motorcycle, doing EMS work, boozing, et al. Seems bogus, especially since the article came from webMD.

Respect your elders, folks, it'll serve you well. Several older women got fresh with me tonight and one said I looked "like a young Brad," either Pitt or Cooper, she wasn't sure. Real ego boost, these ladies.
Got to join the "Healthcare provider stuck by a dirty needle" club this week. Cool group. We have jackets.

EMSers always have a few pat jokes/lines to use on patients. This is a good one:

Whenever I have to put an IV in someone's hand, it usually requires me to get on one knee and hold their hand in such a way that I say, "Don't get any fresh ideas. I promise I'm not proposing right now." Haven't not gotten a cracked smile yet.

Today, my therapist pulled out a copy of their DSM that was heavily annotated with sticky tabs. They wanted to read me the section about OCD. I missed what they said because I was focused on how messy and uneven all the sticky tabs were.

Getting EMS gear: Not comfortable, looks tough, should make a normal non-combat person feel kinda silly.
Getting ER gear: Super comfortable, looks trendy; should make a normal 30-something feel kinda silly.

Ron DeSantis had a complete meltdown when asked about a former Guantanamo detainee who said DeSantis observed his torture. Ron DeSantis for too long has been the boy in the bubble. Shielded from constituents and press in safe spaces within Florida.

In terms of "To Do" lists, I'd put "finding out if I have kids" before "file taxes with H&R Block." But that's just me.
There’s a fully tatted doctor at work who looks like he knows how to kick flip and probably played drums in a college punk band. I want to be his best friend.

Didn't realize we were still following each other (damn the algorithm), otherwise I woulda tagged . Anyway, join me in ordering his book, out June 27!

This clarion song from Wes Lowery is, as expected, extremely good. Once again, tho, I do wish that whenever "diversity" is promoted, such listings explicitly include "class," which - in my experience - has always been the biggest/most influential deficit. cjr.org/analysis/a-tes

Ive never been cool but've always detested nerds. So I'm grateful for this articulation of my subconscious "What counts is collecting, itemising, consuming. This is why it’s almost impossible to be a nerd about anything worthwhile or good." Great writing

Zagorski does her thing here, but/and this thread is super important; especially for EMS & public medicine. Truly can’t wait to devour the whole piece & its topic.

I did an interview yesterday w the AP about the use of chemical restraints by EMS in concert with police. It’ll be out late summer; here are my highlights:
1. EMS does not work for the police and shouldn’t ever abdicate patient decisions to them.
2. This^can happen…sneakily.

Pops, a former unpretentious drinker of the truest class and a 30-year teetotaler, can hardly be bothered to remember or pronounce the name of popular beer paraphernalia. It’s “COO-zee,” Pops.
Broke down and bought some ortho shoes bc I’m getting older and don’t sit during a 12-hour ER shift. Less upset that I’m aging and more upset that it’ll look like I’m chasing some Gen Z fashion trend.
OH, between two guys who just sat down. “She just told you she likes you? So … what’s wrong with you?”
Great friend.

Unmanned google cars have been going around my neighborhood at night for the past month (I get stuck behind them coming home rom shift). I’m at a bar patio post shift where one just ran into a parallel parked car. All us patio patrons are living our best life rn.

Dispatches from home: Pops is now fully in his "growing a bamboo fortress in the front yard to piss off the lawn-obsessed busy bodies and writing a memoir about being the publisher of a defunct firebrand small town paper" phase of his life.

Lesson one: “triage” now sounds scary but it simply means a primary patient assessment of *any* patient and what priority they need to be assigned. It quite literally means to “to sort”.

Some time in the future, I wanna offer public classes on how ERs operate -- the personnels various roles, the difference between being "seen" and being "admitted", why it all takes *hours* -- so folks maybe feel less confused or in the dark and thus less frustrated/troubled/etc.

I would stand before Percy Priest as it breaks open wide to see a White/400 Unit show. I’d fight till a Lawson’s last living day to hear them all ripe a hole in the sky.

Got off ER shift & got to my corner store to find a guy in mild mental/medical distress, who I attended to until EMS got there. Frat boy started filming the guy having an obvious issue & when I said “come on, man” he pointed the camera at me. Hope Frats shows up at my ER one day.

People are worried about automated vehicles, but I just saw the (almost certainly pre-diabetic) driver of one of those caterpillar busses going 40mps, down a very busy street, clock his head 100+ degrees to get an extended look at a woman

Very much appreciate that “scofflaw” is still being used and disseminated to a wide public.

Helped a stranger I was passing by fix a simple device without so much as breaking my very brisk stride or saying much at all, in case anyone’s curious how ER work is directly affecting how I interact with the world.
