Saw a customer today wearing an Attack on Titan half-cape over her dress today. My supervisor said that I probably owned a cape like that. Instantly corrected him, saying mine was black, off the left shoulder only and it was lined, thank you. But that wasn’t the whole truth.
I didn’t like Attack on Titan, and the author’s right-wing politics were something I found out about later. Thus, it’s one of the few bits of media I find objectionable. But my supervisor isn’t enough of a nerd to really appreciate why I don’t like seeing folks wear that merch.
Long story short, right-wing thinking has made anime a bit less fun for me in a way I never thought it would, and put me in a situation where I can’t even offer my full-throated endorsement of a kid being brave enough to wear her cosplay in public. And that’s heartbreaking.
