Chances are good that few Americans could offer a coherent take on this argument between Trump and Graham on US military activities in Africa.https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/graham-tells-defense-secretary-esper-he-could-make-your-life-n1137681 …

So why are 6,000 US troops in Africa? Let's turn to one of the horse's mouthpieces. Shorter: Fight terrorist groups and counter Russian and Chinese influence. One might suggest the former rationalizes the latter.https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2020/01/20/how-africom-plans-to-counter-russian-chinese-influence-in-africa/ …

Has there been a single question about AFRICOM during the Democratic primary debates? Do we know how any candidate views this policy?

The news media tends to ignore AFRICOM unless there's blood. Search Google News and the vast majority of hits are from military news sources, which few outside the orbit of military service pay attention to.

So we have an information vacuum filled by US military propaganda. Corporate news media might ask questions if anyone dies. This is SOP for US foreign policy and military engagements. Very FUBAR.

I should note that even Bleeds It Leads coverage is scant. How many remember that a terrorist attack in Kenya incurred three US military casualties this January? (TBF we were preoccupied by potential war with Iran.)https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/22/world/africa/shabab-kenya-terrorism.html …

For the record, that Somali terror group is funded by Iranian special forces and serves as a proxy for their interests. Their attack on that base happening when it did is the complete opposite of coincidence.

Do they coordinate directly with Iran? Or did they respond on their own? I'm curious how coherent the response is, given the generally loose nature of these networks.

Remember how Suleimani was known for coordinating groups like Hezbollah with Iranian interests? That was what he did, turn organizations to work for his interests. Groups like al-Shabaab are ostensibly independent organizations, but the leadership knows who butters their bread.

So basically—if Iran says “frog”, the proxies jump.

Gotcha. But aren't they affiliated with ISIL? I thought Iran hated ISIL. At least when they were in Syria and Iraq. I know I shouldn't expect anything to make real sense in GWOT, but I gotta try some clarity.
