No, it‘s our duty to actually live up to our own hype. An open, transparent government accountable to the people. A system where the average person’s opinion can make a difference and is represented. A fair and equitable society where opportunity is accessible to all.

These were the ideals that founded this nation. These are the ideals America has tried to strive for over the course of its existence, not always successfully—and shamefully so in many cases. But the struggle for a more perfect union is what makes America worthy of esteem.

That struggle, the attempt to try and live up to the ideal, is what makes the flag worthy of veneration. The sacrifices and work that went into trying to achieve it is what makes the flag sacred. Without those ideals, without the struggle, America is just another tribe.
