    Putting aside whether we could or should create immortality, this video is incredibly misguided on every single point it tries to convey. It’s almost as if a child tried to imagine what would happen if we could live forever. + the video is not an answer to the tweeted question

    This is why so many people have a bias against Panpsychism, I think. Because the model walks a very, very fine line between ontology and theism.

    The brain’s processing of sounds/symbols and producing a response is still a Chinese Room/computer/black box type of system. It’s obscure to us as to how it works as we helplessly digest what we hear & a response appears. But the understanding part is an additional layer on top.

    What still separates a computer from a person is conscious experience. Intelligence & understanding are not the same. Understanding is a component of subjective experience, a signature on top of the process translating and/or correlating symbols. It’s experiential metadata.

    The Chinese Room doesn’t understand Chinese any more than a person who’s memorized the correct responses to sounds without knowing what they mean. An understanding requires having an internal corresponding symbol combined with a feeling of understanding.

    One of the most powerful and interesting predictions of IIT is that simulation of consciousness is not conscious. This is a very specific prediction and I hope this can be tested. This should be the most important concern for anyone interested in mind uploading.
