Fascism pursues strength through unity. Like a bundle of sticks (historical symbol is the fasces) Liberalism pursues individual freedom and equality. Suppose an analogous bundle-of-things is flowers, being pretty in their diverse ways Symbols to illustrate contrast of ideals

I know what the fasces is and what it stands for but now I get your point. If I could elaborate you could also say that a bouquet of flowers is really fragile just like liberalism and its ideology is when facing an opposive collectivist ideology.
