Will added,
Agree with the sentiment but hey the theory that blue/green discrimination might be mediated by environmental exposure does not seem facially insane to me! (Tho doubt the ancient Greek version holds.)
Are you saying the Ancient Greeks were not sufficiently exposed to the green of trees or to the blue of the open sea or clear sky?
No, I am not making a claim about the ancient Greeks, I am saying that the speculative and likely wrong theory at least has a possibility of being right given an (also contentious but better supported) psych theory re the blue green distinction being environmentally mediated.
But it that theory were right and it explained the lack of references to blue in Ancient Greek, then it would imply a certain lack of exposure in someone, no?
Yeah like inland peoples telling seafaring tales sung by long dead skalds. But it is to pile speculation upon speculation.
Homeric tradition was oral, so it's fairly plausible that in the process re-telling the story the original epithet was lost -- but this does not imply any inability to discriminate colors.
(irrelevant brag: i and many others like myself get a perfect score on color discrimination test, which is evidence that language has nothing to do with this -- we don't even have names for millions of colors on that test).
Btw this means your brain is feminine
Could just mean he has a nice healthy occipital lobe :)
this evening: "hey babe wanna come over check out my massive occipital lobe?"
