  1. Such a shame I'm a whole continent and ocean away, otherwise I'd be right there. Who here is going to go and see these amazing beauties?

In the past, Graeco-Roman material was seen as representing distinct 'ethnic' traits - Greek, Roman, Egyptian - neglecting the realities of negotiating an identity in any multicultural society. is as much about diversity as it is about death

Although often interpreted as in the guise of soldiers, a number of figurines of the god Bes actually date to the Ptolemaic Period and show him in Macedonian-style armour - a perfect way to add menace to ward off negative forces

Our exhibition is about more than mummies. It includes objects that might have had an 'everyday' function in the lives of the living but were repurposed for, and probably only survived by being placed in, graves. Thus is our impression filtered by death

Spell 42 of the Book of the Dead associates each body part of the deceased with a deity, to overcome death as a complete, divine entity. The text is a common feature of Late and Ptolemaic coffins from Akhmim, like this of the lady Tasheriankh

Papyri highlight aspects of life (rather than just death) in Graeco-Roman Egypt little-known from . This document concerns the sale of a 12 year old Syrian girl called Zonena (named 'Zoe' in Greek), evidence of long-distance Roman slave trade

Across the Roman Empire, elites commemorated themselves in different ways. In , there were painted mummy panels - in Palmyra, in , similar depictions rendered in local limestone. Idealised, eternal images - not portraits as we understand them

Egyptian cultural interactions with Greece are well-attested centuries before the Graeco-Roman Period. Vessels like this cute and are examples of Egyptian manufacture or influence found on Greek soil from c. 6th Century BCE

It means that anyone who ever has to handle the file knows what they have a photo of (great for archival purposes), and it saves me from having to keep checking back at spreadsheets all the time. The life of a photographer isn't all glitz and glammer, y'know ... 😁 (2/2)

Not the most exciting way to be spending my Wednesday, but adding metadata to my photos is really important. I add info such as the object's accession number, provenance, measurements etc., as well as assigning keywords (1/2)

Contemporary with Graeco-Roman Egypt, the Meroitic Empire in what is now Sudan flourished between 300 BCE & 300 CE. Distinctive Meroitic pottery features in our exhibition, illustrating inter-cultural contact and cross-fertilisation.

Not only do I love the varied and sometimes crazy ways the Egyptians depicted serpents, I'm also fascinated by the dichotomy of them sometimes being powerfully protective and sometimes being malicious. I always home-in on them with my camera

I love emojis, but you can't equate them with the complex, expressive, beautiful language of ancient Egypt in a nice, simplistic way. However, if you to make a comparison, in my opinion, emojis are more determinative than ideogram.
