Crimeans ran the biggest slave port outside of West Africa through 18th century. Was only after Catherine the Great ended Crimean slave trade in 1774 that the traffic of Slavs stopped. As victims of slavers, Russians are only Europeans to never colonize brown or black people.
To be true, I don't think that any broad strokes would be inaccurate. The conflicts between Slavs (my beloved ancestors) and other nations on the borders, were happening all the time, and leaders fought for power, while common people paid the price. As usual.
