Sometimes, in order to understand my friends who have never seen the face of the Machine, I imagine that I haven’t seen it, either. I imagine how I would feel and think if I never had the opportunity to look under the hood.

In that place, the clean and rational world in which “really big, mind-bending lies just don’t happen here” and “we just need to elect the right person and work on policy" is very logical. Problem is, that world is imaginary. But it takes personal experience to find that out.

Soooo beautiful! Vast majority is lit. super distorted as a means of econ. survival or self-aggrandizement. Authentic are only maybe handful of temporarily cheerful youth, self-elected “bums” &very few “professionals” lucky enough to exp. ego death without falling into poverty.

All the more remarkable and beautiful for his having written it age 24 in the reading room of The British Museum whilst sleeping rough on Hampstead Heath. Read it avidly as a teenager & it may well be partly responsible for my never really having been able to “fit in”.
