American here and I find it annoying when someone expects for me to take my shoes off at the door and DO NOT offer me anything to put on my feet: whether it be socks or house slippers. They expect me to walk on a bare cold [and possibly dirty] floor. I offer my guests house shoes
I hear you! That was the custom when I was growing up. But in the past years, habits changed, and people don't seem to like the idea of wearing another person's shoes (not literally and not figuratively :)
