A distinct and very depressing sign that I recognize from the Soviet Union is the need to qualify all language in order to "reconcile" is with the "politically correct" view. You can't just say things, you need to explicitly discredit anything that goes against the grain.
Please write more along these lines. I think historical comparisons are the best way to meet people where they are. Too many intelligent people are having the same ideaological debates over and over and aren't seeing the forest for the trees.
