The stories we get don't make any sense. They require us to accept obvious abuse as "normal," "logical," or even "good." As long as one's physical safety is not visibly jeopardized, the brain keeps inventing justifications in order to prevent a total collapse of the identity.

What I see is this. While the people who've had direct experiences of abuse in the past are freaking out and screaming from the rooftops about current state of affairs, the "innocent" ones, who are experiencing it for the first time, are NOT registering what's going on.

This is a classic reaction of a previously innocent person to abuse. It is not a fault but it is a liability because shutting one's senses in order to avoid a cognitive dissonance is not going to save anyone from being crushed. Bullies never stop. They ask for more.

The comfort of American culture has created a lot of "innocent" people, especially in the academic, intellectual class. It's hard to imagine that the tower can come down. It's hard to imagine that the entire echo chamber of "smart, educated people" can be off. That's the tragedy.
