Unfortunately, at least to my senses and in my honest estimate of a former academic and an artist thirsty for facts whatever they are, it's rooted in corruption and payola, with smearing of dissenting voices to make sure that the narrative is shaped from the top down.

Which is very Soviet (including the use of language). That recognizable absolutist tone and the public acceptance of smearing dissidents as "crazy" (based on arbitrary narratives presented as "facts" and accepted mostly due to repetition) is exactly how a culture commits suicide.
