Sadly, the American culture (at least the prevalent American culture of today) is oppressively rigid, and I get reminded of it when I talk to those who don't live here and who are not hammered with a sack of anti-curiosity bricks on the head all day, and I suddenly feel normal!
It really is so oppressive. I am not talking about any particular ideology, it's the format that promotes 24/7 dumb performance & messenger virus behavior and punishes free exploration of reality. Of course, when an ideology is utilized to protect profits, it gets worse.
I spent my teens in an environment where raw intellectual curiosity and unobstructed expression were considered pillars of dignified human existence, something that people had fought for and finally won. My senses do not accept the degradation of knowledge that is happening.
