) that calls for, essentially, letting people voice what they think and express their views—regardless of the majority consensus any given moment—without the risk of being fired. 1/
Some of the people who have signed "the letter" have themselves "cancelled" others for their views, which obviously makes their signatures hypocritical, unless they have genuinely changed their minds since. This is a problem but it is a separate problem. 2/
I suspect that the real reason for the heat is tremendous stress that has little to do with the linear logistics of the argument. When people feel endangered (which is everyone right now), we act jumpy. Jumpy but powerless citizens is a treasure for any feudal overlord! 3/
