The gullible citizens who bought into the (genuinely painful and destructive) tyrannies of the past considered themselves as enlightened as the citizens of today! They depended on the "correct" soundbites to feel good about themselves in the same way it happens today.
The most soul-defying, murderous ideas are typically sold to the public as "public good," until too late. There is nothing original about it. There is nothing particularly clever about it. It's been done many times. Physical reality doesn't care about our delusions.
