I am strongly convinced that on both macro and micro levels, some of the biggest underlying problems we have are lack of depth and extreme fragmentation. And corruption. Of course, we shouldn’t forget the fascination with money and its frequent triumph over truth.
Over the past several years I realized that in many areas of knowledge, the perspective offered to the layman by the mainstream media—regardless of the ideological slant—is near the opposite of how things are, if you take the time study the subject in-depth and with an open mind.
Copyright, international politics, plastic pollution, electromagnetic pollution, health, you name it... the layman gets the perspective of whoever has the most $$. Authentic knowledge eventually finds its way to the mainstream—but with a huge lag. Sometimes it takes decades.
We accept the fact that in the past—or in places that we don't like—widely accepted axioms could be the opposite of truth, like DuPont's famous "Better Living Through Chemistry" or any bit of foreign propaganda. But we cling to our own axioms for our dear lives. Does it help?
There is also a very interesting concept of what it means when one says "we" or "they" — and who is important enough to represent the proverbial public opinion, given that there is nothing under the sun besides a bunch of disparate people privately thinking all sorts of things.
I remember that mythical entity from my Soviet childhood, where collective trauma was used to shame happy people. It was not labeled as such though. There was always some volunteer speaking for the entire country, the entire generation, etc. A myth.
