Years ago, Nicholas Carr wrote about automation and how excessive dependence on processes might result in a tragedy if the situation requires a departure from processes and quick, hands-on decision making. He was specifically talking about pilots, doctors, etc.
It's a very emotional topic for me because months ago (before the pandemic), I had a family member in the hospital and the prevalence of protocols over common sense surprised and shocked me. I didn't expect that. I thought about Carr back then. I am thinking about Carr now.
