The irony is that business love automation. It means less workers, less pay slips, higher profits. But who do they expect to buy their products when we're all out of work. An extreme example, I know, but in essence, true.
Exactly! Curiously, the original corporate motive for establishing the 40-hour work week was to give the workers just enough leisure time to consume products and services. The workers could then choose to go on a trip, so they would need a car, etc. etc.

And of course there is house ownership. The mortgage is the modern slave chain that ties us down to a life of servitude in order to service the debt.
