The kind of intellectual freedom he demonstrates in his stories, is no longer possible in the States. I forget about it in the fuss of the everyday, but when I see it, I remember what it felt like to be free, to talk free, to not compete with zombie talking points.

When I was a teenager in Moscow, intellectual curiosity for the sake of knowledge—not for the sake of selling something to somebody—was the default modus operandi in my circles. The love of self-promotion (and the need of it, let's be honest) has eaten the American soul.

Our culture here is orphaned due to its ultra commercial nature, hustling for retweets filed under "commercial nature" also. Pressure to forget one's soul in order to please the machine maims people. Even though everyone—myself included—get used to it, harm is real.

It is actually necessary for mental health, I think. And it is missing. It is easy to repeat the same talking point (well, some talking points are easier than others). But actually thinking out loud freely, adhering to your soul alone? Gone, gone, and gone. Which is not great.
