Carefully worded statement about "no operating sensors" in Google's surveillance towers. But docs show that each tower has 3 cameras and 30 sensors - what kind? NYC citizens still haven't been told. Who watches the watchers?https://twitter.com/NYCDoITT/status/1152234141116768256 …

Also, saying these aren't *operating* sensors means (if the claim is true, and I haven't seen an independent audit) that the towers are packed with sensors that aren't **YET** activated. Surveillance towers packed with dormant sensors does not reassure me.

Same with facial recognition. Google's LinkNYC surveillance policy claims (again, with no independent audit supporting it) that they don't engage in facial recognition... *today*. Even if the claim is true, it says NOTHING about what Google does tomorrow.

And another thing. 1,800 surveillance towers lighting up our formerly public spaces with their insistent movie trailers, and twee animations, and saccharine-friendly "NYC fact #915" nonsense, is all just habituating citizens to the idea of living alongside surveillance towers.

The saddest part to me is that most people are so legitimately preoccupied with basic survival that the horror of living in a 100% surveilled society won't hit until people can't get jobs or loans on a massive scale b/c of some stupid crap that ended up on camera.
