So here's more about Russophobia and general stereotyping. You know what, lame, shallow everyday stereotyping has always been around, I can live with it. Not ideal and annoying, but fine, whatvrs. Ivan Drago, Red Sparrow, blah blah blah.
However, what is happening today in terms of Russophobia on the left and all sorts of phobias on the right, is institutional. It's a perfect storm where the state and the media collaborate to demonize people in an environment where it is already not safe to talk freely.

However, the biggest sin in the American culture, still, is not ideology or ethnicity. The biggest sin is not being plugged into ANY eco system / echo chamber where somebody with deep pockets will subsidize your existence because what you do is good for their bottom line.

Everything and everybody is a symbol. It took me many years to see it. Even being a favorable symbol is an illusion. If the symbol that you are helps somebody make money or raise their profile, awesome. But it is not about anything real. Xenophobia is a subcase of symbolism.

It was a great shock to me when I finally realized how shallow the presentation is on every end. The brain wants to assume that we talk and read about reality and people—but no. Almost everything is about egos and symbols. Everybody is too tired to care about reality.

And that's the fundamental problem. Everybody is exhausted. There is this game we are encouraged to play: yell at others on Twitter, condemn, elevate, do speeches, write books, dehumanize the enemy, symbolize, symbolize, symbolize.... but most of it is a muted cry for help.

Because in the heart of hearts, nobody wants to be an excuse for other people's ego maneuvers. It is normal for a human being to desire genuine respect that has nothing to do with branding or ideologies. And the latter is almost entirely missing in our culture.

The litmus test is whether a politician or a reporter condemns unjust treatment of one demographic but is totally fine with abusing another. When it happens, it means that we are NOT talking human beings but symbols. There is nothing normal about it.
