To my eyes of an immigrant, American mainstream culture attempts to view absolutely everything through the lens of entertainment and profit-making. Including the things that cannot and should not be quantified, like relationships, dignity, and basic autonomy of thought.
It's like an instant clownizer that is mandatory! You have a feeling or a story? Great. Now, clownize it pronto, or you will look really, really weird. You know that, right?
But the problem is that once something's been clownized, it loses its connection to the physical world, to the love, to the mystery that makes life worth living. And you know what, it is really annoying when you are only of interest as a topic, not as a human being.
