People truly are strange creatures. I have thought about it a lot, because of all sorts of wtf situations I dealt with. I think you are right. Countering it requires individual commitment to confronting bigotry on the inside, and not allowing it on the outside, either.
Which seems like it would be a natural thing to do (make a choice against bigotry, easy), but people get carried away if a collective psychological setting allows one to forgo the basic feeling of relating to another human who also bleeds red. A long way to go.
