Here is the thing. I truly like everybody. I can have a cup of tea and a conversation with a person holding any beliefs and convictions. I believe that most people do their best under the circumstances. I believe that everybody makes mistakes. But aspiring for honesty matters.
And the media coverage of my ethnic culture in these quarters of the world is mostly childish, full of ungrounded stereotypes, generalizations, and immature assumptions — but God forbid you object – then you are clearly on Kremlin payroll. Cultural sensitivity, anyone? Maybe?
It’s a fascinating time. Russian experience in dealing with authoritarianism & petty formalistic bureaucracy is highly relevant in today’s America, yet we’re incapable of escaping simple narratives. Blind belief in equal opportunity & the pursuit of happiness can’t be our guide.
I think pursuit of happiness is fair. Happiness is a thing of nature, a thing of freedom, it's good. What bothers me in today's media culture is that very few people are willing to even try serving facts as opposed to massaging facts to serve them. It's very extreme.
