NOBODY NEEDS 100 COUNTIES. *IOWA* IS THE MONSTROSITY
-
Iirc Iowa has so many counties because when they divided them up they wanted anyone in the county they lived in to be able to get to their county seat in one day’s wagon ride or less.

What is it with Americans and SQUARES?!
-
Short answer: 1. Iowa is a relatively flat featureless wasteland (1190ft difference between highest & lowest points) with few natural permanent features to act as borders. 2. The 44 original counties were played out before Iowa became a state.pic.twitter.com/XZamNVvWz4

American state and county borders are the most boring things I’ve ever witnessed. Should try 1000 years of bloodshed like in Europe, t’would make them far sexier.
-
To be fair, they're mostly only boring & rectangular west of the Mississippi. East of the Mississippi is wild & squiggly lines for all!
