Nobody uses a paper size has a round number measurement. US also commonly uses 8" by 10.5" binder paper for kids in school. I would think the most logical would be something like 200mm by 300mm, or 8" by 12". But no.

The advantage of A4 is that the ratio of height to width is the same when it's folded in half. A5 is half the size of A4, and an A4 design can scale down to an A5 booklet or up to an A3 poster without waste or distortion.

As world dictator my first act would be to forcibly standardise everything, on pain of pain. Mostly on standard (metric) units, A4, Celsius, right-side-driving, Schuko/Euro plugs. I'd allow pints for beer, and I'd concede "aluminum" over "aluminium", due to historical evidence.

However, anyone caught discussing the merits of "alloy vs steel" will be convicted to scratching "steel is an alloy" 1000 times into a large stainless steel plated wall.

Letters US use less papers than A4 .. point if view purely ecological and economic
