I was honored (and flattered) when the University of Chicago, Harris School of Public Policy asked for my views on saving democracy. My answers are on their website. You can view them here:

  3. Then it’s a dumb move. Lining up the votes for a censure would be a good move. Duh.

  4. I assumed, possibly wrongly, that Manchin is lining up the votes for this, not that he is throwing this out just to have it voted down.

Trump is compiling a post-impeachment enemies list and Bolton is at the top of it. Trump had told people he wants Bolton criminally prosecuted. My latest:

He could vote for both. Replacing the vote to acquit or convict with a vote to censure or not means that Trump can't say he was acquitted. Under the rules they can do that if they want because they can basically do whatever they want if they have a majority of votes.

Me, too. A lot depends on the wording. The majority of the Senate in Andrew Jackson's case was angry with him, so the censure was sharply worded. Do the have the courage to do that? 6/

It definitely doesn't get them off the hook for refusing to hear witnesses and testimony. Censuring Trump without all the evidence does not mean that the Senate didn't engage in a coverup. It also depends on how the censure is worded. 5/

Trump's hero Andrew Jackson is now the only president in US history to have been censured. (Jackson's allies ended up getting the censure expunged from the record when the Democrats regained the Senate. Trump won't get that because his party now controls the Senate.) 4/

A censure is accurately described by the Post as a "less severe rebuke than removal." But it's still a rebuke. Trump would not be able to say his call was perfect, he did nothing wrong, and he's completely exonerated. I'm in favor 🙋‍♀️ 3/

. . . that Manchin would not raise this if he didn't think he could get the votes. Raising this and having it shot down would, er, not be good. If they couldn't get the votes to allow witnesses, it didn't occur to me that they could get the votes for a censure. 2/

More here: Screenshot for people who can't access it. I didn't expect this to happen in the Senate because I didn't think a majority of Senators would go for it. (I assumed it would come later from the House). I assume . . . 1/

Sen. Joe Manchin (D) called for a censure vote. What's that? Something I wrote about in a thread and blog post. Here's the thread: (When I predicted that a censure was on the horizon, I didn't imagine it would happen within a few days.)

Impeachment Hearings, Day 12: Val Demings just reminded everyone that Vice President Pence knew what was happening, which of course, is the reason Republicans voted against additional evidence. They want to hide the depths of corruption in Republican Party.

"The Sun will Rise Again" Notice: Great leaders don't spread messages of doom because it's self-fulfilling. What precedent is being set? That depends on whether enough Republicans are voted out of power to send a message that the people won't tolerate sham trials.

Jonathan, caught using logic. (This doesn't work with Republicans)

Exactly. If any Republican members of Congress vote for it, they're kicked out of the club and are no longer Republicans, which means no Republicans voted for it, which means it's partisan so Republicans can't vote for it. Sure. That makes sense 🙄

This nicely summarizes the problem with GOP members of Congress saying they won't vote for a "partisan" impeachment. If they voted for it, it would be bipartisan. They create the partisanship, and then insist they're hampered by the situation they created.
