Teri Kanefield’s Tweets

Lists are already on Mastodon (at least on my server, which has the latest software). On Mastodon, I have lists for legal analysis, journalists, and political scientists. Once you learn how Mastodon acts like Twitter minus a few features. twitter.com/newmanth/statu 9/

Lists are on the road map for Mastodon. Hopefully soon! joinmastodon.org/roadmap

I'm a "content provider."😆 I provide my content on social media for free (I "monetize" by making my editors pay me. I don't ask my readers for money.) I won't provide content for Musk, so I'll write stuff like this, and put links to my work. My "content" goes elsewhere. 8/

Yes, for me this was the greatest value. A One Stop Shop. Breaking News. Smart People. Friends and people I like. Funny: I always wanted to be a writer. That ambition goes back to childhood and predates wanting to be a lawyer. Turns out . . . twitter.com/CarolCiavonne/ 7/

I liked being able to see poets and news and the instant feedback of the lawyers I respect, in one place. What a mess Elon has made.

. . . (and professionally written headlines are bad enough). So mostly I've been posting links to my weekly blog posts there, or a revised blog post. I do my threads and analysis on Mastodon and sometimes put the link here. I'm resigned to spreading out over various sites. 5/

I also answer questions on my blog. (I used to answer a lot of questions here, but engagement here has fallen off, and I get a lot more interesting engagement on Mastodon. I find I dislike Post, which feels like headlines being shouted at me . . . 4/

Now it's splintered. My legal list has been mostly replaced with a whole bunch of newsletter subscriptions. I figured out how to set up an RSS feed, so there I have my breaking news. I use Mastodon for conversations and answering questions because it works well for that. 3/

I knew what was happening right then, in court or the halls of Congress, before it made the headlines. I was ruthless with my lists, which I kept private. If a smart lawyer started spouting nonsense, I took them off my list. I didn't unfollow so they never knew. 2/

More reflections on the direction of Twitter. What I liked was everything in one place. I had a list of "legal scholars." Click. I could see what all my favorites were saying. I had another list of journalists who covered government and law. Click. There it was. . . 1/

I revised my Twitter-Post-Mastodon-Others comparison in light of new information: Post will evidently be connecting to the Mastodon fediverse. Medium is allowing its writers to connect to Mastodon. A thing called Activity Pub, and more.

Consider the possibility that things will get worse, that Musk, who controls the code, fully intends to do the things he says he intends to do.

My engagement is extremely low now too And I'm still hearing from followers almost every day that they can no longer see my tweets And that I've been removed from their notifications feed without their permission (if so, please re-add me) Things continue to be very difficult here twitter.com/Teri_Kanefield…

Is anyone else suspicious of that number to the right? It's that number that stops people from thinking, OMG my engagement here is lower than a cellar. If a tweet is shown to people who don't want to see it, does it count? (If a tree falls in the woods . . . )

I think this sort of thing gets people past the first hurdle: How to pick a server, because the server DOES matter. If you are a Medium author, your interests align with Medium's interests, so you are unlikely to find yourself at odds with the operators of your server. 4/

Consider the possibility that you can only fight this for so long. Find a loophole to avoid Musk's will and he'll close it. He has said what he intends to do, and he controls the code. (See the blog post in my pinned tweet, which I now have to update with new developments)

They are filing the feeds up with suggestions from very bot-like users. I never see @Teri_Kanefield anymore twitter.com/womensart1/sta…

techcrunch.com/2023/01/12/med Also Medium is launching its own Mastodon instance. Now I have to go try to understand this well enough to update the blog post in my pinned tweet. I think "to federate or not to federate" will turn into "federate or get left behind in the dust." 2/
