History lesson for Laurence Fox: Every sixth British soldier serving in WW1 was from the Indian subcontinent, Sikhs made up more than 20% of the volunteer army (close to 1.5m served). 74,187 Indian soldiers died and a comparable number were wounded. Sikh troops were vital in the first battle of Ypres, but their contributions were overlooked. Britain imposed martial law on Punjab which created the conditions for the Amritsar massacre where 379 unarmed protesters were killed in April 1919.

Historical facts, huh? Like in the 2000s when Muslim men raped thousands of white children who they regarded as not worthy of respect because thy were kafirs? That historical you are talking about? I bet none of them would go and fight for Britain if there as another war.

1917 had several historical inaccuracies, the one I was completely fine with was a Sikh soldier being with a British company. I thought that’s a good nod you don’t often see to all the colonies who contributed to WW1. Didn’t think it felt forced at all to me.

It was a truck of stragglers from different units, if you look at their unit shoulder badges, they were all different.

The truth is nobody knows. Unlike Fox the service record keepers weren't interest in ethnicity. Any British nationals enlisted that were also Sikhs could only be guessed at from their names and, of course, something of a blind eye was turned to recruits giving false details.
