Remember that practical we did a couple of weeks ago for 2nd year BioMed students using BLAST? It went well. Now, here is an idea for a question to be included in the coursework: discuss what is wrong in the recent preprints about 2019-nCoV that use BLAST :)

Refreshing an undergraduate lecture on gene regulation for Friday. What are the most exciting recent developments in gene regulation that you'd suggest to include?

For example, if I want to create a FASTA file with mutation NM_000520.6:c.1274_1277dup, doing it manually is quite inconvenient (getting the FASTA from NM_000520.6, then finding location 1274, etc). Is there some database where I can click on a mutation and get FASTA?

I am now trying to reverse-engineer a set of several human DNA sequences with "famous" mutations, to give them to students to detect the associated Mendelian diseases. Where can I get such sequences without manually composing them?

May be too much to ask, but is there some online tool where students can upload FASTA file with DNA sequences (or just paste one single DNA sequence) and get the list of detected mutations as output? P.S. Tools which need local installation are not an option for this practical

this is the practical that we discussed in the car. It's in a week :) Which tools did you have in mind?

Could you please suggest simple online tools to use for a 1-hour practical for BioMed undergrads who did not have any exposure to bioinformatics? Story plot: they are given cfDNA "from septic patient" to determine what's in there, as a matter of life & death. Any suggestions?

Happy New Year to our friends and colleagues! This is a third attempt of the new lab photo :) We still need to make a proper winter photo :) As a bonus, also included a couple of historic photos with one of us after university graduation and PhD defense :)

The history and mystery of chromatin [video] Recent lecture by Ada and Don Olins about the history of the chromatin field and their current research. BTW, reference to Otto Bütschli (1892) for the model of liquid-liquid phase separation.

Another interesting effect reported in this paper. Reviewers rightly asked us to clarify the role of Cohesin in CTCF-induced chromatin boundaries. So here it is: the presence of Cohesin makes asymmetric nucleosome arrays near CTCF more symmetric. 10/n
