I’m having a hard time understanding how any of the things mentioned here are misunderstood by the professions of the people mentioning them.
-
-
-
Yeah, in practice ppl use it for “what only my fraction of the profession sufficiently acknowledges”
-
Looks to me like people read your question as “What’s something that seems obvious to the general public that your profession has shown is false?” which is basically the exact opposite of what you asked.
-
Many people do misread it. But there are good examples; I've RTd a few.https://twitter.com/NurielMoghavem/status/1014911144954290177 …

I owe it to this--though I didn't RT because I feel sad for the poor postmodernists.https://twitter.com/samuelmehr/status/1014301742211715076 …

Most software makes people's lives harder instead of easier.
-
I think most software folks know this fact, they just think of their own work as the exception.
-
Nah. I know this fact too, that's why I follow the principle: Keep it simple, clear and configure it in such a way that the normal user doesn't need to visit the preferences.
-
Thinking developers know the answer for user problems is part of that same problem set.
-
Dev: I will make this simple and intuitive. Users will love it! User: What the ... ? But how do I ...? And where is ...?

Public: we think we have a stake in your research and that you should take account of our opinions and feelings in your research choices, planning and process. Academic: Hmm... Nope...
-
That’s mostly fine other than publishing in closed access journals. If the public is paying for research through government or tax-exempt charities, we shouldn’t have to pay $30 to access the results of that research.
-
I think my tweet covers that: shouldn't academics make choices to publish in
#OA if at all possible? This would seem obvious to the general public - publish where we can read it, but "your profession seems to misunderstand" is the nope in response to that obvious need. -
Oh oops. I missed that this was in response to the “flipped” one; thought it was saying the “academics” were correct and the public didn’t understand.
-
Heh, no worries, I was puzzled ;o) I wonder how many other people are reading it that way and going "yeah, I'm fine with that - screw the public and their pesky needs!"

Many 1st gen and low income college students are one family emergency away from having to leave school.

The author, who is not dead, meant what s/he wrote. Also it is an excellent reflection of how things were at the time of writing.
