I wrote a book. It's both about new approaches to literary history and about a few specific discoveries. Even if you hate the thesis, you'll need a copy to cite in your exposé; plus, it's cheap and has a lovely cover! Out in March; pre-order at Chicago .

Don't usually RT 1-yr postdocs, but when they're in Paris ... maybe that's a good place to spend 12 months applying NLP to French fiction?

TIL that "The Purloined Letter" is the original source of Vizzini's megalomaniacal triple-reverse-psychology re: iocane powder.

Gave a job talk on "Resolution and Independence" where I described the rhyme scheme as an abbreviated Spenserian stanza; well-prepared undergrad asked "um, isn't it rime royal?" And I was like "... yeah ... or maybe that." Dinner afterward felt long.

Yes, this is a flowery glamour shot of the latest issue of PMLA, “Varieties of Digital Humanities,” edited by ⁦⁩ and ⁦⁩. Have never read an issue more quickly or with more enjoyment. Not online yet, I think? But keep your eyes peeled.

I received from copyedited text of my forthcoming book "Cultural Analytics" - and its the best copyediting I ever saw in my 28 years of publishing. My text is 110,000 words. Copyeditor and press editor made 12,719 edits. I am accepting close to 100% of these edits.

Nature article comparing rates and patterns of cultural change to biological evolution. There are reasons to be wary, starting with the assumption that LDA topics are cultural "traits." But the conclusions are still intriguing.

For , I & are analysing the 2020 Czech Science Foundation grant competition. Keywords co-occurrences trace the disciplinary composition rather well, whereas award success shows no clear pattern, except perhaps a slight preference for disciplinary cores. 💰👩‍🔬

I feel like the gradual improvement of web search over the last 25 years is an under-appreciated story. I used to have to strategize about search terms; now, 9 times out of 10 when I have a question I just type the question in the search field. "How many cuts are there in 1917?"

Underrated take on "interpretability." The problem we're encountering is (often) not that our models are accidentally opaque, but that the world is genuinely complex.
