Let's review what we've learned in the last 48 hours or so about the storming of the Capitol. The pieces of the puzzle have come quickly but piecemeal, so it's a bit hard to see. But I think, when considered together, they point to the possibility of a planned attack. (Thread)

        1. Trump promoted the rally "For weeks, President Trump and his supporters had been proclaiming Jan. 6, 2021, as a day of reckoning. A day to gather in Washington to 'save America' and 'stop the steal' of the election he had decisively lost."https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/06/us/politics/capitol-mob-trump-supporters.html …

        3. Trump knew the planning included a march on the Capitol—and wanted to join the crowd. "Trump had told advisers in the days before the march that he wanted to join his supporters in going to the Capitol, but White House officials said no."https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/08/us/politics/democrats-trump-impeachment.html …

Hogan said, and he immediately mobilized state police and the National Guard. 6. Trump starting making calls to overturn the election "Trump called the personal cell phone of Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, shortly after 2 p.m. At that time the senators had been evacuated from the Senate floor and were in a temporary holding room."https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/08/politics/mike-lee-tommy-tuberville-trump-misdialed-capitol-riot/index.html …

That appears to be every element of an assault planned in advance, amplified by inaction, and leveraged in the moment to achieve an illegal nullification of the presidential election. No doubt more detail is needed. But this, in itself, is enough to warrant full investigation.

Among the questions to be answered: To what degree were Trump supporters in Congress, such as Sens. Hawley and Cruz, privy to the plan? Yes, Trump is leaving in a few days. But many of his supporters have years remaining in their terms.

One coda, the NYT story says: "Behind closed doors, Trump made clear that he would not resign and expressed regret about releasing a video on Thursday committing to a peaceful transition of power and condemning the violence at the Capitol that he had egged on a day before."

We need an understanding of what happened ASAP, because there are efforts underway online to organize a second assault. We have to make sure that Trump's regret that he committed to a peaceful transfer of power doesn't turn into open support for this renewed effort.
