I disagree with this. If I were to try to put myself in his shoes I probably would also not say anything if my friend (in this case Zach) told me not to out of respect for him.

Yeah but you never really know if you are doing more harm than good. Especially considering that Zack really didn't want his family knowing about it. I think being complicit to potentially protect someone elses safety or whatever else is morally right.
