Why does “clout chasing” or “social climbing” bother you? I have an idea why it bothers people, but I want to hear your thoughts.

Clout is a necessary component of success if someone wants to have influence in general. The easiest method would be to suck up to different people at a time, so those who make it on primarily their own merits are held in higher regard.

Good point, really glad you brought this up. There's a difference between clout chasing, where your only attributes are your ability to manuever a social climate, in line with whatever is fashionable at that point in time (this is kinda why "gamer girls" tend to thrive at this)

And networking to further promote and market a brand to build a sustainable community where you offer a product (entertainment, high-end footage, educational material etc) and see turnover that could translate monetarily. This popped into my mind earlier today.
