Yeah but lots of people don’t treat it that way or agree with it so changing the definition of sex essentially changes the definition of gender to a lot of people

This completely gas lights trans people to have the privacy to their specific circumstance. It also gives the trump admin the ability to decide for them selves the legal side of all of this. Very troubling

Hard-defining sex (if it would EVER be necessary) is the cart before the horse. Only when you have a society that accepts the separation of chosen gender (sex-coded social norms) vs biological sex would this be helpful. If they wanted to help they would be defining gender (1/2)

(2/2) Right now, defining it like this gives government the easy ability to require biological sex in whatever forms they want. Definitely not the harmless, 'makes sense' type thing you want to think of it as - this is an admin who does not want trans folk in military...

It's more nuanced than that, but the specific reason this is a cited instanced of trans erasure is that while medically sex and gender are defined as different things, we still use them interchangeably in social contexts and hence many trans people label their sex accordingly.

In legal contexts, there is no reason to identify based on sex in the first place. Sometimes people do not function as the gender corrosponsing to their sex and hence "gender" would make more sense as a legal identifier.
