As far as politics, I think the smart thing to do would be to follow people on the other side to understand where the debate is at and where their arguments stand. Follows/Likes should not work as an endorsement of one’s entire platform/online persona.

That's why I try to do. I enjoy looking at the other side of the argument, as well as those who would agree with me

^This people rush to say "oh well you liked x person's tweet/follow them so you must agree with everything they think" when that could not be the case at all. you can agree with someone's opinion without agreeing with everything they've ever said (if I'm reading you correctly)
