@TeamYouTube - I’ve noticed recently that videos on the homepage of the mobile app now start playing automatically. I was wondering how this effects views on a video? If someone watches this way does it register as a view?

That doesn't seem right. Videos don't automatically play on the YouTube mobile app's homepage. Can you let us know what device do you see this on? Does it happen across devices? Let us know.

Oh, well that’s weird
Unless I’m wording it wrong? But if I scroll down my YouTube home page I’ll see the thumbnails, and if I stop scrolling over one for a moment it will begin to play with subtitles. I’m on a fully updated iPhone 6s+, doesn’t happen on desktop.pic.twitter.com/xsxOkcTxwP

Oops, sorry for the confusion. It's the new feature on YouTube app, which plays a video automatically while you're on Home tab with captions. You can also turn it off from your settings. Find out more about this here: https://goo.gl/DjGHnC . Hope it helps.

Ok, one mystery solved lol. But the article doesn’t help with the original question - Do videos watched in this way still get views? Does it need to be watched for a certain amount of time to count as a view or does it not count at all?

Hmm, have you checked our Help Center article on 'how video views are counted': https://goo.gl/NjAipR . Hope this helps clarify.
