Looks as if @YouTube damaged their iPhone app. With the phone in portrait mode, most of the screen is black when a video is playing, and I can see almost no comments or listings of other videos. (At least on this iPhone SE.)

Seems to have worked. I should remember that deletion and re-installation is the first thing to try with wonky iPhone apps. Thanks!

And now it’s back on at least some videos. If it’s a feature rather than a bug, how do I turn it off? I like to be able to read and write comments while a video plays, and being able to see only a small chunk of them under the video, with the rest of the screen black, is a pain.

Start video in portrait mode. Everything normally below it is visible. Rotate phone 90 degree: video fills the screen as usual. Rotate back to portrait mode & half the screen is black: the video plays and there’s a small area of visible stuff below it, with black above & below.

That's odd, have you checked if there are any pending software updates for you device? If there are any, try updating your device to the latest version available and check if that makes a difference. Let us know how it goes.

Far as I know, the OS is up to date as is the TouTube app. Looks like this:pic.twitter.com/rGAXuLoSQf
