Hi Kim! If I know them I call them by their name. For research, I identify the group as struggling readers and relevant sub-groups. The importance is knowing the relationship with the audience. Individuals are people- data collection categories are not.

Though this is still somewhat deficit based I’ve been trying on in my work with teachers, “students we’re struggling to teach.” Puts the struggle on us as educators.

Oooh, I like this.

I learned the term “vulnerable readers” from you. I like that one.

That's building on
@davidekirkland's "vulnerable students."

‘Students who need instruction in/support with (fill in the blank- phonics, fluency,books, comp...).’ It keeps me from giving a generic label (positive ones feel like euphemisms so any grouping label feels problematic to me) and instead focuses on the specific work we need to do.

Are these two different questions? I am assuming yes and I see many answers to the 2nd but not the 1st. From Seattle Public Schools I learned to say “students furthest from educational justice” to refer to kids we marginalize in our schools and society.

Oh, I really like this: "students furthest from educational justice." Boom.
